Is it cheating? Is it lying?

The thing I LOVE about teaching Grade 7 is that students are forming opinions and are always ready for a debate (at times this is not so enjoyable). Today, I encouraged students to log into the Aviva website to support the Knox United Church in their efforts to put an elevator in their building. We discussed how this is a community building used for not only church, but Nursery School and Festival.

I did not know that students had to give their email and check a box that said that they were 18 years-old. Some students were ready to check the box without a second thought, while others wanted permission from me. One student said that they were going to log in twice, so they could vote twice. Another passionate student told them that that would be considered cheating!!

What were we to do? Is it lying to check the box that says we are 18? Is it cheating to log in and vote twice in one day? Students discussed and debated the issue and I let students make up their own minds…stating that it might be a good idea to discuss this issue with parents tonight.

I encourage everyone to vote and to discuss our moral dilemma. What do you think?
